Baby Eyes

During our hospital visitations, one of the privileges that I receive is looking at newborn babies. They look at you with awe and wonderment. However, once they hear the voice of mom, they turn their heads toward that familiar sound. They know the voice of mom. Each time one of my children were born, I was in the delivery room. Each time I held that precious child in my arms. Each time I looked into their eyes and made baby noises. It’s an awesome experience.

One of the greatest moments in my life is when each child extended his or her arms to me and finally smiles and says “Dada”. I look into their eyes and melt. To see life. To see creation. To see growth and baby steps is a wonder. Once I had my first child, I understood the text in Genesis “And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.” Genesis 5:21-24

It was after the birth of Methuselah that he had a conversion experience. Children will have a powerful effect on you. You will also see the awesome wonder of God. There before you is a miniature replica of both parents. Then their eyes turn and look at you. They don’t have to speak. They don’t have to smile. They look deep into your eyes and see their Dada. Immediately they are calm knowing that everything is going to be fine.

Have you ever wondered how God looks into our baby eyes? Just imagine, He had just created Adam with His own hands. Then He gave Adam the breath of life. As Adam’s eyes opened for the first time, he beheld his Dad. The angels watched with awe at this new creation. From the moment we were born, God’s love has surrounded us.

The same way we looked into the eyes of our babies is the same way God looked into ours. This happens again when we make a decision to follow our Creator after a life of sin. There is a process that Christians go through when they submit their lives again. It’s called baptism. We are born again. We have a new start, a new life in Christ. As we commit our lives anew to Jesus. He looks down into our eyes and smiles.

But the Bible doesn’t end there. On that day, when we finally enter the gates of heaven, God looks into our eyes. He sees you. His child. He takes you and holds you in His arms. “And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. Revelation 21:3-5

What about today? As we wait for the day to look into Jesus’s eyes, and He looks into our precious eyes, let me give you some words of encouragement.

“In this morning’s meeting [a conference held in Battle Creek, Michigan], we were listening to the testimonies borne here, and as the last hymn was sung “When shall we meet again, meet neâ’er to sever?” I almost forgot myself. My mind reached over to the other shore, to the time when there will be a grand meeting in the city of God around the great white throne, and the redeemed will be singing there of triumph, and of victory, and of praise to God and to the Lamb. Well now, it brought such a solemn, sweet feeling upon me; it softened my heart, and I could not prevent the tears from flowing. Oh, what happiness we shall enjoy, gathered round about the throne, clothed in the white robes of the righteousness of Christ. No more sorrow, no more separation, but to dwell in peace, to dwell in happiness, to dwell in glory through the ceaseless ages of eternity. What a happy, happy company we may be!” {TDG 333.2}

This Sabbath, may you be reminded that we have a Father, who looks into His babies eyes, and is looking forward to that special Day to Hold us.
