Little Things

We were driving back from our ministerial convention in Austin Texas, when Pastor Tim saw a 3-week-old little cat on the side of a major road. It was lying on the white line terrified, and crying out for its mom. I quickly made a U-turn at the next available opportunity, and went to rescue this tiny kitty yelling for help. He ran into the grass a few feet away hoping to hide from me. I grabbed the kitty by the neck the same way a mother cat grabs her kitten. It was a little thing shaking, shuddering, and shivering in the palm of my hand. Then it looked at me with little tears coming down its eyes. Right away, my heart melted. I was hooked.

Well this little scrappy looking fur ball is now eating, drinking milk from a bottle, and is adapting to its new environment. Our older cat has adopted this mini-toy and is beginning to check on his progress. It is the little things in life that have big surprises. God is concerned for the little things in life. “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. “ Luke16:10 It’s the little things that can have an long lasting impact. One good is example is Leaven. “…Know ye not that alittle leaven leaveneth the whole lump?” 1 Corinthians 5:16

A cook understands how a little flavoring can change an entire dish. An astronaut understands that a little deviation off course can cause a spaceship to miss an entire moon or planet. A doctor understands how a little shaking of the hand during surgery can result in a major catastrophe for the patient. A diamond cutter understands how a wrong tap of the chisel, or a slight micro off its intended placement can change the value of a diamond. It’s the little things that lead to major effects in life.

Little things do matter. For example, how are lakes or oceans formed? It all begins with the little brooks that are created by snow melting or rains gathering into little brooks. These brooks interconnect during their travels and become creeks. These creeks interconnect and become streams. Streams flow and become larger as other creeks intertwine with the streams. All these Interconnecting waters gather more water and become rivers. Finally these rivers pour their blessings into lakes and oceans. It all begins with a little brook!

How are you with the little things in life? Remember God places the little things before us. How we handle the little things will decide how we handle the major events in our lives. Here are some words of insight.

“God tests and proves us by the common occurrences of life. It is the little things which reveal the chapters of the heart. It is the little attentions, the numerous small incidents and simple courtesies of life, that make up the sum of life’s happiness; and it is the neglect of kindly, encouraging, affectionate words, and the little courtesies of life, which helps compose the sum of life’s wretchedness. It will be found at last that the denial of self for the good and happiness of those around us, constitutes a large share of the life record in heaven.” {ChS 191.3}

May God bless you this Sabbath, as we take care of the little things
