A Safe Space for Men: What God Started at Our First Men’s Meetup
Houston Central SDA Men’s Ministry

This past weekend, something meaningful happened: 32 men gathered at Houston Central for our very first Men’s Meetup. Some came from other churches, some were invited by friends, and one brother even showed up just from seeing it online. It wasn’t just a meeting—it was movement, momentum, and ministry in motion.
One of the attendees, Mike, said it best:
“Thanks again for having a group of men that were more than welcoming and including me in everything! I had a great time being tossed into it… I stayed for hours and loved it. The other groups I’ve been to were only about 90 minutes—and that’s not enough time for the men who are missing that kind of camaraderie in their day-to-day lives!”

📖 Real Conversations Rooted in the Word
The core of our time together was a series of Bible-based group discussions, focused on real issues men face today:
- 🟨 Respect vs. Love in the Home – This was the most powerful discussion. Using Ephesians 5, we explored the deep need men have for respect, and the biblical call for husbands to lead with sacrificial love. Brothers opened up about relationships, responsibilities, and how we can break cycles of misunderstanding by following God’s design.
- 🟦 Mentors, Brothers & Mentees – We looked at Moses, Jesus, and others as models for spiritual mentorship. How do we pour into the next generation? Who’s walking with us? And who are we letting lead us?
- 🟩 Silent Struggles of Successful Men – Many men look “put together,” but are battling silently. We talked about burnout, shame, and how Scripture reminds us that true strength is found in surrender and community.
- 🟥 Conflict Among Brothers – We dove into examples like Cain & Abel, Jacob & Esau, and Paul & Barnabas to reflect on unresolved conflict and biblical reconciliation. Unity isn’t optional—it’s the foundation for revival.

After the Word: Food, Fun & Brotherhood
Once the discussions wrapped up, the night shifted into something just as impactful: shared meals, friendly competition, and real bonding.
- Taco Salad Bar – Elder Lewis helped us put together a delicious taco salad spread that was an instant hit. His wisdom (and flavor sense) set the tone for a great meal.
- Smoothie Competition – One of the highlights of the evening!
- Marlon and the “Jamaica” crew created a rich, avocado-peanut butter smoothie that was creamy and well-balanced.
- York’s team (with Michael and Phil) initially left out the ginger (against York’s advice), but after adding it, their smoothie truly leveled up—nearly a winner!
- The young guns, Ikechi and Prentice Jr., went vegan-style with a soy milk-based juice blend that was light and refreshing.

- Basketball Showdown – Marlon and Phil went head-to-head in a friendly (yet intense!) free-throw competition, showing off some real skills.

- Soccer Goal Kicks – Brother Friday and Fred impressed us with their accuracy, but Jason surprised everyone by scoring the longest goal—from full court!

- Push-Up Challenge – Chris Godfrey brought out his traveling push-up board, sparking an impromptu fitness challenge. What started as fun turned into something deeper—a moment of accountability. It reminded us that spiritual strength also involves physical stewardship. And yes, a few of us realized it’s time to hit the gym again!

A Night to Remember… And Build Upon
We laughed. We learned. We listened to God.
This night reminded us that men need these spaces—to grow, to lead, and to be led.
And this is just the beginning.
