The Hummingbird

As I was looking out the window of our home, I saw a beautiful sight, a hummingbird drinking nectar from our flowers. The bird was still in the air, while it was focused on the flowers. Like a helicopter, it was moving up and down, and side to side as it was going from flower to flower. It flies like a bee, zooms like a dragonfly, and still looks like a bird.

I decide to research more about this small bird that stays stationary while its wings move. Here is what I discovered. The hummingbird is the smallest bird, and is the smallest animal that has a backbone. Despite their love for nectar, they have no sense of smell. The hummingbird can rotate its wings in a circle giving it the ability to hover. During their migration to the North America, this little bird flies non-stop 500 plus miles over the Gulf of Mexico. Their wings can beat between 80 to 200 beats per second and their heartbeat can go as high as 1,260 beats per minute. (www.howtoenjoyhummingbirds.com/index.htm)

How wonderfully made is this bird. Further study revealed that we have close to 10,000 species of birds. Scientists have estimated that we have over 1.7 million of the world’s species of animals, plants, insects and algae. The variation, the variety, and vast types of colors and sizes are incomprehensible, yet God is the Designer of all creation. Each bird may look alike, but they are not. Each giraffe may look alike, but their neck designs are not. Each zebras may look alike, but their stripe placements are different. Each snowflake may look alike, but their crystallization is unique. God in His wonder has made you and I unique. When you look at creation, it is incredible in its design and complexity.

The psalmist says “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” Psalms 139:14 We are special, one of a kind. There are times when you look in the mirror and you don’t feel special to God. At times you feel ugly, depressed, and rejected. However, I want you to know that this is a misconception. God knows you by name. You are special to him. Jesus says this of our Father in Heaven. “Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?” Matthew 6:26

Unlike the hummingbird, we are designed in the image of God. So when the enemy whispers into your ear, remind him that our God knows you by name.
When he whispers in your ear falsehoods, remember that you are a child of the King. You are wonderfully made. Here are some additional insights:

“We are God’s workmanship, and His Word declares that we are ‘fearfully and wonderfully made.’ He has prepared this living habitation for the mind; it is curiously wrought, a temple which the Lord Himself has fitted up for the indwelling of His Holy Spirit. The mind controls the whole man. All our actions, good or bad, have their source in the mind. It is the mind that worships God and allies us to heavenly beings. Yet many spend all their lives without becoming intelligent in regard to the casket [the human body] that contains this treasure.” CG 360.1}
Let us praise Him this Sabbath as we remember that we are fearfully and wonderfully made and He knows our name.
