Reflections Spotlight: Alicia Baker

How easy is it for our youth to fall into Satan’s hand? How easily can our youth be lost in the darkest part of this world? This month’s Spotlight guest, raised in the SDA church, protected and sheltered growing up in America’s Heartland, found a dark and dangerous world that began while away at university. One choice, one misstep led to a life many never live to share. Spiraling deeper out of control for a 10 year period, kidnapped and…

Reflections Spotlight: Marco Mendez

Thousands of lives are affected each year by the excessive use of alcohol and drugs. This month’s Spotlight was introduced to alcohol at the age of 3. Growing up with alcohol all around him, alcohol abuse became a lifestyle. Risking everything his life was saved from several major drunken driving accidents, narrowly escaping death more than once, was given warnings and jail time. Through the death of a loved one, shaken by a supernatural experience, and a foretelling message…

Reflections Spotlight-Jennifer Morgan

Born with a life-threatening medical condition Sister Morgan, has experienced more than a few moments of uncertainty and episodes bringing her near death. Suffering blood clots throughout her body (including her lungs nearly depriving her of all her oxygen), hospital stays for surgeries, struggling as a single mother during her illness, her faith was tested and the mighty hand of Jesus was revealed. Hospitalized, near death, with a red blood cell count of 4 due to severe hemorrhaging, tests were performed…

The Mighty Tree

I remember as a pathfinder going to our Camporee and enjoying the beautiful landscape of nature. There was one tree by one of our lower division Sabbath school classes that was perfect for picnics or just laying in the shade as the soft breeze came over you.   The tree lived thru many storms, blizzards, and even periods of drought. It stood majestic, picturesque, and was my favorite tree in the entire camp. Then one day, the ground moved as lightning…

Making the Change: The role of attitude in health reform

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”  Philippians 4:13. The ability to make any positive change or growth in Christianity has to be based in a dependence on God to do the seemingly impossible for His glory. A firm belief that God can do all things for His people that ultimately result in His name being glorified has to be present before the positive reform can be embarked upon. Many do not make health reform a subject…

Reflections: Spotlight on Personal Testimonies – April Strickland

Husband and wife team April and Joshua Strickland share a personal testimony on preparing for country living, what led them to develop the Reflections Ministry, how the Lord has revealed Himself through trials and triumphs and what work He has set before them. “This came about from a long series of events”, April states as the testimony opens, “and what this is meant to do is draw the congregation together and get us talking about what it is the Lord…

Making the Change: A Decision for Health

We all lead generally very busy lives. Time is a precious commodity and not an inexhaustible resource. Demands on time can include and are not limited to; church, work, school, family and the list goes on. Most of these demands however represent a choice based on wants and needs. The choices we make on what to spend our time on also represent what we value.    Values can become a part of our lives by instruction we receive and accept, or experientially…

The Garbage bags

Have you ever had garbage bags that were on the brink of their load capacity? You have put more and more junk into them until you realize that just maybe you over did it? Well, I had broken several bags because I was rushing to get things into the garbage cans before the trash collector and his truck arrived. I didn’t like picking up all those smelly items, saturated items, sickening germ infested items and putting them into a new…

The Big Race

If you have ever ran in a race, you know that in order to run the race you need to practice, practice, and practice. There are no short cuts, no quick track to preparation. You need to invest the time, make the time, run the time, and then recover in time. I remember still when I had the privilege in running in a 4-man relay in the New York City sponsored youth Olympics. We were selected by our peers to…

Assembly Required

I remember building a playground set for our children for the 1st time. We purchased the kit, followed the instructions, and secured the wood. Then we obtained the bolts, screws, washers, drills, and everything the instructions asked us to acquire. The children helped build this new play set with swings, bridge, slide, seesaw, rope climbing ladder, and even a two-deck style tree house. It was impressive, until I looked into my box and realized that I still had extra bolts,…
